Taxation Situation

I know it’s because I’m lucky enough to be in a high tax bracket, but it’s weird when you get paid and more of your income goes to taxes than you actually receive.

Kinda doesn’t seem fair when you consider how little billionaires are actually taxed relatively1.

  1. Yes, I know all the reasons/excuses for why this is the case.

Tons of Photons

Time Warp: Delayed-Choice Quantum Erasure.

This article is crap. It sounds convincing and is not wholly wrong, but the most important parts are misleading or are completely incorrect.

I haven’t researched this person but the article seems to be written by a superdeterminist type. Also, it’s cute when physicists and other STEM randos do philosophy without realizing they are doing it. It’s always so poorly expressed and kindergarten-level (as seen here).

Anyway, retrocausality is not at all required to explain the effects observed in this experiment and almost no actual physicist believes any retrocausaility explanation. This is a straw man argument. This part isn’t even a quantum result, really! You can do the same thing with completely classical objects, even macro ones.

It’s all very stupid, in other words. The basis of the article and the article itself.

But on to where the article is incorrect. This delayed choice experiment still works even if the detectors are widely separated. And by widely, I mean any distance at all, when there is no time for light (or any signal) to pass between the points. And that is a true quantum effect. (Though what really matters here is time separation, not space separation! But in our universe, they are analogous. Most of the time.)

To expand on that a bit, neither one of the photons is in any particular state before some measurement occurs. It’s not that we don’t know the state — it’s that it does not exist. Again, it is not a knowledge problem. There are ways of testing this and people have won Nobel Prizes proving this to be true.

Moving on, then. What I said about time above means that when you separate something like two photons there is no “real” time something occurred. It is observer dependent. And the delayed choice experiment still works under such conditions because the nature of entangled photons means that if one is detected as Polarity A then the other must be Polarity B no matter how separated they are (in time or space), and no matter which reference frame “thinks” which photon is detected first.

That’s where the author’s contentions fall apart. Poor article with a real lack of any deeper understanding of the physics or the universe. Removes some mysticism, but replaces it with garbage.

Fail.

Flubber

Microsoft Edge is also removing the ability to use uBlock Origin. Without that add-on, the internet is not usable. Firefox is the last browser standing and it’s also terrible.

We could have done so much better but flubbed it. As usual. Evil won because good was too weak.

Diff

Readers, What are the tells that a male character has been written by a woman?

Men when together don’t talk all that much. When a woman writes male characters hanging with other men, they talk way, way more than men do in person.

Which makes sense! Men talk a lot more around women. So that’s what the ladies experience and so that’s what they write. But it’s not actually how men are when they are together without women around.

For instance, in the past I’ve hung around male friends for hours and we’ve exchanged all of ten words. And both liked it that way.

Degro

Degrowthers are some evil fucks. They are fine with billions dead and don’t mind saying so. They see it as just punishment for past sins.

Humans are so prone to religiousness in various forms, even if they themselves cannot recognize it and handle it like an adult.

Genie-al

The next phase of putting the information genie back in the bottle is increasing (US) state-level tech regulation that de facto bans services like Mastodon and anything else similar to it.

This will be done under the cover of protecting “privacy” and “for the children” but will really be for the purpose of making sure nothing that’s not large-scale and easily-controllable can exist.

It’s already starting. And many so-called liberals will be right on board with this.

Putin Got Ya

The Talks That Could Have Ended the War in Ukraine.

Anyone who believes this terrible article is a Putin propaganda victim. I’m sorry for you but it’s true. Russians are masters at propaganda as they spent so very long perfecting it.

And it works. These “peace talks” were to buy Russia time so they could regroup and invade again after Ukrainian defenses were down.

Russian intelligence (FSB) even said that themselves. Believe Putin why? Gawdamn y’all stupid.

Unstandard

Other than the fact that a lot of men’s work does not get counted in “labor” (including actual labor at work), women and men have vastly different standards. Neither is right or wrong, but women often compare themselves and their home to impossible ideals and lash out/blame others when those absurdly-high standards are not met.

For instance, if a man has a child that is throwing a fit and refusing to take a bath, most will say, “Guess you’re going to bed dirty” and leave it at that. Women, though, are far more likely to spend two hours battling the child to take a bath.

Which is more likely to lead to better mental health for all? To feeling less tired and resentful?

Whether it’s biological or socialization or a bit of both, women often feel compelled to attempt to achieve the perfectionist impossible while men are ok with, “Eh, good enough for now. No one is dying and we have food.”

It’s no surprise, then, that kids raised by single fathers more often turn out ok but those raised by single mothers face much worse prospects on average1. Excessive neuroticism does not lead to good outcomes — and women are far more neurotic than men. I know, I know, women feel they “have to” be that way. But feeling something doesn’t make it true.

Play Liszt

People react oddly to how I consume music. One reason is because I have no set playlists. Every single playlist I make is unique and ephemeral. I never save them. I also don’t use Spotify, which seems de rigeur now in people’s minds. I also don’t listen to albums (generally hate them) and rarely listen to much that is beyond 10 years old.

A friend wanted me to share my playlists with her and was incredulous when I said I didn’t have any. But I do not.

This works for me but as with many areas of life, I recognize that I am puzzlingly unusual.
